Subject:
Increase Ethnic Diversity in Higher Learning
Comments:
I am concerned by the assumption that increasing diversity in higher learning somehow means watering down the curriculum, or incluing students in honors students who have not earned the right to be there.  Involving more underrepresented students, including African-American, Native American, and Latino students, does not mean that higher learning or advanced courses will suddenly become less valuable.  There are many barriers that we as a school system set up, sometimes unknowingly, but these barriers still prevent students and parents, particularly minority students, from accessing honors, advanced placement, and other high level courses.  Many talented students languish is regular or low-level classes!
