Increase Ethnic Diversity in Advanced Learning
Comments:
I think it's critical that we increase the ethnic, racial and economic diversity of the children participating in the advanced learning programs. This is a good place to begin closing the achievement gap. We are not doing enough to help all children reach their full potential.
I don't think we need to abandon objective entrance criteria, but I would like to see Seattle Public Schools be creative about developing or modifiying existing objective measures so they work for all kids. When I voiced my concerns on this issue two years ago, I was told by district staff that we employ "nationally normed tests" that are effective and unbiased. I dont' believe this is true. We need to do more to identify talented but underserved kids. We need to figure out how to get them into the programs that can best meet their needs, and keep them there. If that means providing family outreach and support, then let's make that a priority.
The achievement gap should not be closed by clipping the wings of the high-flying students, and bringing everyone closer to the middle. We need to find a way to help all children soar to the highest heights.
If there were more underserved children in the advanced learning programs these kids would serve as peer role models for greater achievement at every level.
